Many of us were disappointed to learn about what happened to the two innocent African American men, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson who were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks back in April. As an African woman its a huge goal of mine to support black owned establishments as much as possible and to conduct my spending in environments where the color of my skin isn’t automatically a threat. That desire lead me on a hunt for any black owned coffee houses near my local area and is how I learned about Tiferet Coffee House.
The cafe is owned by two sisters and we got to meet one of them, Makeda Berhane during our visit. One thing that immediately stood out to me was how extremely friendly and inviting she was. Makeda took the time to tell us about how they started and her love for working the counter because it allows her to get to know her customers in a way that feels like family. They currently have three locations throughout the downtown Sacramento area but the location on H street has the best parking option and is the one we decided to try out.
Tiferet Coffee House has daily deliveries of locally made pastries and sandwiches. You can come for coffee and tea 6 days out of the week, Mon-Sat. They also offer breakfast, and lunch during their hours of operation, so if you have time to sit, stay for a meal.
Overall we had an amazing experience. Talking to her is very uplifting and inspiring. You can definitely feel the genuine love and care she has for her customers. We will be back and make this a place to visit regularly whenever in Sacramento, CA.
